The environmental organization Greenpeace has warned of the problems facing the tuna industry in Pacific countries, which cannot compete with foreign fleets that fish in their waters, the Australian press reported today.
Pacific countries blame the rise of tuna fleets, including China's, which are carrying out large-scale operations and buying the rights to fish in the Central and Western Pacific, according to Australia's ABC network.
For Nathaniel Pelle, a Greenpeace spokesperson, although Pacific nations receive money for the rights to access their waters, their share of the profits from tuna fishing, estimated at more than 6.316 billion dollars (4.593 billion euros) per year, is less than 10%.
